Emergency HVAC Service in Saint Johns

AC quit in the middle of the night? Heater stopped working during a cold snap? We’re available 24/7 for genuine HVAC emergencies throughout Saint Augustine, Ponte Vedra, and Northeast Florida.

For routine repairs or maintenance, we recommend scheduling during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm). You’ll get better service, lower rates, and our techs can give your system proper attention.

True emergencies: Call (904) 921-1344 anytime if you have no AC in dangerous heat, no heat in freezing weather, gas smells, electrical sparking, or water leaks.

What Counts as an Emergency?

Real emergencies are situations that can’t wait until morning or create safety risks.

Call for Emergency Service If:

  • No AC during extreme heat – Dangerous temperatures (95°F+), especially with elderly, young children, or health conditions
  • No heat during freezing weather – Risk of pipes freezing or unsafe cold conditions
  • Gas smell near your furnace or heating system – evacuate and call gas company first
  • Electrical sparking or burning smell from HVAC equipment
  • Water leaking inside your home from AC system causing damage
  • Carbon monoxide detector alarm – evacuate immediately
  • Complete system failure during extreme weather with vulnerable occupants

Can Probably Wait Until Morning?

These issues are frustrating but can usually wait for regular business hours (and save you money):

  • AC not cooling as well as usual but still blowing air
  • Heater running but not quite reaching your desired temperature
  • Strange noises but system still working
  • Suddenly high energy bills
  • Thermostat display issues but system responds
  • Dirty or clogged air filter
  • Warm air from some vents, cool from others

Not sure if it’s an emergency? Call us and we’ll help you decide. We won’t pressure you into after-hours service if it can wait until morning.

Before You Call: Quick Troubleshooting

Sometimes simple fixes can get you through the night. Here’s what to check:

If Your System Won’t Turn On:

1. Check the Circuit Breaker
Go to your electrical panel and find the breaker labeled “AC,” “HVAC,” or “Air Conditioner.” Flip it all the way OFF, wait 30 seconds, then flip it back ON. Sometimes breakers trip without visually moving to the off position.

2. Check Your Thermostat

  • Make sure it’s set to COOL (for AC) or HEAT (for heating)
  • Set the temperature 5 degrees lower (AC) or higher (heat) than current room temp
  • If the screen is completely blank:
    • Some older thermostats have batteries (AA) – check the back or battery compartment
    • Most modern thermostats (especially touchscreen) are hardwired and don’t use batteries
    • A blank hardwired thermostat means no power – likely a blown fuse or transformer issue

3. Check the Outdoor Disconnect Switch
Near your outdoor AC unit, there’s a disconnect box (looks like a small gray box on the wall). Make sure the handle is in the ON position. Open it and check if the fuses inside look burned or broken.

4. Check the Furnace/Air Handler Door
Your indoor unit has a safety switch that shuts everything down if the access panel isn’t closed properly. Make sure the door is completely shut and latched.

5. Check for Water in the Drain Pan
If your condensate drain pan (under the indoor unit) is full of water, the safety float switch will shut down your system. Empty the pan and see if the system turns back on. If it fills up again quickly, you have a clog that needs professional attention.

6. Check Your Air Filter
A severely clogged filter can cause your system to overheat and shut down. If you can’t see light through your filter when you hold it up, it’s too dirty.

If none of these work, call us at (904) 921-1344.

What to Do During an Emergency

If You Smell Gas

  1. Don’t turn any lights or appliances on or off
  2. Don’t use your phone inside the house
  3. Open windows and doors if safe to do so
  4. Get everyone outside immediately
  5. Call your gas company emergency line first (or 911 for strong odors)
  6. Then call us once you’re safely outside

If You See Sparks or Smell Burning

  1. Turn off the system at the thermostat immediately
  2. Turn off the breaker to your HVAC system
  3. Don’t try to investigate or fix it yourself
  4. Call us at (904) 921-1344 right away

If Your AC is Leaking Water Inside

  1. Turn off the system to prevent more water damage
  2. Put towels down to protect your floors/ceiling
  3. Check the drain pan under your indoor unit – if it’s full, the drain is clogged
  4. Look for a small float switch in the pan – it may be stuck
  5. Call us for repair – water leaks can damage your home quickly

If Your System is Making Loud Noises

Grinding, screeching, or banging sounds usually mean:

  • Blower motor bearings failing
  • Something stuck in the blower
  • Loose parts bouncing around
  • Compressor problems (expensive if ignored)

Turn the system off and call us. Running it with mechanical problems can cause more damage.

How Emergency Service Works

1. Call Anytime

Call (904) 921-1344 day or night. You’ll speak with our emergency dispatcher who’ll assess the situation and give you an estimated arrival time (typically 1-3 hours depending on location, weather, and current call volume).

2. Technician Arrives Prepared

A licensed technician arrives with diagnostic equipment and common parts. We’ll inspect your system, identify the problem, check for safety issues, and explain what’s wrong in plain English – not HVAC jargon.

3. Get You Comfortable

We’ll fix it on the spot when possible. Our trucks are stocked for common emergency repairs like capacitors, contactors, and thermostats. If we need to order a special part, we’ll get you basic heating or cooling as a temporary fix so you’re not suffering.

4. Follow-Up if Needed

If we couldn’t complete a permanent repair, we’ll schedule a follow-up during regular hours to finish the job properly and test everything thoroughly.

Prevent Future Emergencies

Most HVAC emergencies happen because of skipped maintenance or ignoring early warning signs.

How to Avoid Emergency Calls:

Get twice-yearly maintenance
Spring tune-ups for AC, fall tune-ups for heating. We catch small problems before they become expensive emergencies.

Change your air filter regularly
Every 1-3 months depending on pets, allergies, and usage. A $5 filter change prevents $500 repairs.

Don’t ignore warning signs
Strange noises, weak airflow, short cycling, or high energy bills mean something’s wrong. The sooner you fix it, the cheaper it is.

Keep outdoor unit clear
Trim grass and bushes at least 2 feet away. Clean leaves and debris off the unit.

We handle all your maintenance and you get priority service when something does go wrong.

Florida-Specific HVAC Tips

Understand your system’s limits
Your AC can typically maintain about a 20-degree difference between inside and outside. If it’s 100°F outside, expecting 70°F inside is realistic. Expecting 65°F is not – your system will run nonstop trying.

High humidity is normal in summer
Florida summers are brutal. Your AC removes humidity, but it can’t make your home feel like Arizona. 50-60% humidity indoors is normal here.

Frozen coils in summer heat
Yes, your AC can freeze up in 95°F weather. Usually caused by low refrigerant, dirty filters, or blocked airflow. Turn it off, let it thaw, and call us.

Winter heating matters too
Florida “winter” can drop to freezing. If you have a heat pump, don’t panic when you see steam coming from the outdoor unit during defrost cycles – that’s normal.

When to Replace vs. Repair

Repair if:

  • System is less than 10 years old
  • Repair costs less than $1,000
  • You’ve had regular maintenance
  • Only one component failed

Consider replacement if:

  • System is 12+ years old
  • Repair costs more than half of replacement
  • You’ve had multiple repairs this year
  • Energy bills keep climbing
  • Uses R-22 refrigerant (being phased out, expensive)

We’ll always give you honest recommendations. If replacement makes more financial sense, we’ll tell you. If a repair will give you several more good years, we’ll tell you that too.
