Before you let anyone work on your home, it’s worth taking a minute to confirm they are a licensed contractor. Florida makes this really simple, and you can do it right from your phone.
Step 1: Go to the Florida DBPR License Search
The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation has an online search tool.
MyFloridaLicense.com
When you open it, you’ll see a few ways to look someone up. You can search by:
- The contractor’s name
- The business name
- The license number (this is usually the fastest)
If a contractor won’t share their license number, treat that as a warning sign.
Step 2: Make sure the license is truly valid
Once you find the contractor in the system, look closely at a few things:
- Status: It should say Active
- Expiration date: Make sure it isn’t expired
- License type: It should match the work they claim to do
- Complaints or discipline: If anything shows up, take a minute to review it
Anything that says Suspended, Inactive, or Null and Void means they are not legally allowed to work.
Step 3: Ask for proof of insurance
Florida requires contractors to carry liability insurance and either workers compensation or a valid exemption. A legitimate contractor will always be willing to show this. It protects you and it protects them.
Step 4: Double check local requirements
Some counties and cities in Florida have their own registration requirements on top of the state license. If you want to be extra safe, check with your local building department.
Why This Matters
Hiring a licensed contractor gives you protection, accountability, and peace of mind. It also helps you avoid unsafe work, failed inspections, and expensive problems down the road. A few minutes of checking can save you a lot of stress later.
